Fat Nation

America, land of the free and home of the fat. Read all about it at MSNBC.com

In this country we eat a lot of food. More than we need. That’s a simple fact. But what we eat is just as bad, and we do it to ourselves.

It is much easier to go to McDonald’s that to cook your kids a proper dinner, so we do that. It’s much tastier to go out to have Mexican than to eat a healthy meal of fish and vegetables, so we do that too.

Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s our own fault, an individual decision to over-indulge.

And it’s not easy to stop. Four years ago I was 30 pounds overweight. I made a commitment to exercise three times a week, come hell or high water. Despite being a high-school cross country runner, jogging a painfully slow 1.5 miles was my limit for the first month.

I kept this commitment, but did I lose weight? No. I was still eating improperly, so despite my greatly improved level of fitness, a year later I weighed exactly the same.  It took even longer to get my weight in line. But it can  be done, if one cares to try.
