The U.S. House of Representatives, not put off by President Obama’s peculiar reticence to embrace the millions of Iranians desperate to have the kind of freedom first fought and died for in America, just voted overwhelmingly to pass a resolution in support of those protesting in favor of free elections in that country.
Democrat Howard Berman gets it right:
“This resolution is not about American interests,” said Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee. “It is about American values that I believe are universal.
These values are indeed universal. 20 years ago Chinese protesters stood up to an oppressive government demanding freedom and died for their bravery. The same thing could very well happen in Iran today. While the House vote means exactly nothing in terms of on the ground help for these courageous men and women, it does draw a line of sorts in the sand saying, “If you murder your own people for daring to dream of a better life then you have gone against one of our sacred principles.”
In a small way, this vote makes me proud of our Congress and to be an American. Despite our many blunders, there are many times when we get it right, as in this case.
