by Mike Huckabee is a great speaker, from the way he connects with an audience to his cadence to his ability to improvise. He’s a funny guy who’s quick with a joke and a smile. But like a comedian who’s got them giggling and makes one quip too many going for the full belly laugh, Huckabee’s sense of humor backfired on him today. If there was any truth to the rumor that he was at the top of John McCain’s V.P. list – where he belongs, in my opinion – that hope may be gone now.

Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.
“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he’s getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
The first sentence was funny, the second stupid. Not funny. Huckabee’s already issued an apology which, unlike most we see in the American political arena, was deserved.
