Coach Rick Neuheisel was fired for betting on the NCCA basketball tournament. The thing is, for those who may not know or care, he’s a FOOTBALL coach.
So where’s the crime? The U. of Washington seems to have fallen in with the mob of schools firing their coaches over non-athletic “moral violations”. But this is not a case of Pete Rose betting on baseball, now is it?
Frankly, colleges have placed far to much emphasis on sports and frequently exhibit a total lack of class in their ill-advised attempts to acquire more glory for these academic institutions. Witness the demise of R.C. Slocum at my alma mater, Texas A&M. Nowhere will a classier coach be found, but he simply wasn’t winning enough. So, 15 years of service be damned, R.C., you’re outta here.
Here’s hoping Neuheisel keeps his job.
